5.13 Registering LAN Switches (L2 Switches)

This section explains how to register LAN switches (L2 switches).

Use the following procedure to register LAN switches (L2 switches):

  1. Discover network devices. For instructions, refer to "Discovery".

  2. Register LAN switches (L2 switches) displayed in the network device tree. For instructions, refer to "Register".

Note

Use the registration method described in this section when managing LAN switches (L2 switches) which have been managed using the same usage method before migration, in the case of migration from the ROR V2.3 or earlier versions, or the ROR Virtual Edition to the ROR Cloud Edition.

When registering new network devices such as LAN switches (L2 switches), use the method described in "5.7 Registering Network Devices".

Discovery

  1. From the ROR console menu, select [Tools]-[Topology]-[Discover Network Devices].

The [Discover Network Devices] dialog is displayed.

  2. Perform the following settings:

    Start address

Enter the start IP address of the network where to discover network devices.

Enter the IP address using periods ".".

    Subnet mask

Enter the subnet mask of the network where to discover LAN switches.
Enter the IP address using periods ".".

    Addresses in range

Enter the number of addresses to scan for LAN switches.
Enter a number greater than 1.
The maximum number of addresses is determined by the number of hosts allowed by the subnet mask.

    Example

If subnet mask is "255.255.255.0", the number of addresses in the specified range could be any value between 1 and 256.

    SNMP Community

Enter the SNMP community that was set on this LAN switch (L2 switch).
Either select [public] or enter an arbitrary string.
Enter a string of up to 32 alphanumeric characters, underscores ("_"), and hyphens ("-").

  3. Click the [OK] button.

Resource Orchestrator starts scanning for LAN switches within the specified network range.
Discovered LAN switches (L2 switches) will be displayed under the network device tree with the status [[Unregistered]].

Register

  1. In the ROR console network device tree, right-click a discovered resource, and select [Register]-[Network Device] from the popup menu.

The [Register Network Device] dialog is displayed.

  2. Perform the following settings:

Network Device name (Node name for management)

Enter the name to assign to this LAN switch (L2 switch).
Enter up to 32 characters, including alphanumeric characters (upper or lower case), underscores ("_"), hyphens ("-"), or periods (".").

By default, the name of a discovered network device will be set to its system name or to its IP address if the system name could not be detected.

The registered LAN switch (L2 switch) will be displayed in the network device tree.

Note

It is possible to set an automatically detected IP address to another unregistered network device. However, this will result in the Resource Orchestrator configuration being inconsistent with the actual network configuration.
If a network device was registered with the IP address of another network device, delete the target network device following the instructions given in "9.4.2 Deleting Network Devices", then perform Discover and Register again.
