6.4.1 Threshold Monitoring

This function monitors the threshold values for the Thin Provisioning Pool capacity used.

Threshold Values and Threshold Monitoring Status

The values of the "Caution threshold value" and the "Warning threshold value" set for each Thin Provisioning Pool and the Threshold monitoring status are displayed. The "Caution threshold value" and the "Warning threshold value" are prepared at the storage device, and are the threshold values for Thin Provisioning Pool capacity used.

The threshold monitoring status is displayed with the following icons and character strings.

Threshold Monitoring Status

Meaning

Normal

The usage rate of the Thin Provisioning Pool is below the Caution threshold value.

Caution

The usage rate of the Thin Provisioning Pool has reached or exceeded the Caution threshold value but is below the Warning threshold value.

Warning

The usage rate of the Thin Provisioning Pool has reached or exceeded the Warning threshold value.

Threshold Value Settings

The initial values for the "Caution threshold value" and the "Warning threshold value" are set by the storage device when a Thin Provisioning Pool is created. If required, change the settings for the capacity threshold values.

Procedure for Setting Threshold Values

Set the threshold values by using Web Console.

Action to Take When Threshold Values Are Exceeded

If threshold values are exceeded, then follow the procedures below:

  • Detection of status change

When a threshold value is exceeded, the product displays an SNMP Trap in the event log and Dashboard of Web Console, which notifies the change in the Thin Provisioning Pool status of the storage device.

  • Updating to the latest status

For devices that do not support automatic updates of the device component status, perform the Reload Conf. operation on the applicable storage device after checking the displayed event.
For devices that support automatic updates of the device component status, it is unnecessary to perform the Reload Conf. operation. Refer to "2.5 Monitoring Device Component Status" for information on the devices that support automatic updates of the device component status.

  • Checking the status of the Thin Provisioning Pool

Start the Thin Provisioning Pool monitor window and check the Thin Provisioning Pool status. Extend disks or take other action in accordance with the exceeded threshold values.

See

If the SNMP Trap that notifies of changes in the Thin Provisioning Pool status is not received due to packet loss or other reason, then the product detects the change by polling the Thin Provisioning Pool information of the storage device. Since the polling interval is one hour, the time from status change to detection is within one hour. The polling intervals can be customized. Refer to "A.8 Polling Service Setting File" for details.

Information

Even if capacity reaches "Caution threshold value" which is set for each LogicalVolume, SNMP Trap is not sent. "Caution threshold value" for LogicalVolume is a threshold value for unallocated capacity of LogicalVolume which is at the storage device.

Capacity Depletion Monitoring of Container Volumes

If the capacity of the Container Volumes in Thin Provisioning Pools enabled with Deduplication or Compression is depleted in the ETERNUS DX S5 series, DX8900 S4, and ETERNUS AF S3 series with a firmware version V11L40 or later, this product displays "Caution" for the threshold monitoring status of the Thin Provisioning Pool and the threshold monitoring status of the Container Volume.
