3.5.1 Creation of Tier Pool

The items which can be specified to the Tier pool are as follows.

Basic Configuration Items of Tier Pool

Item

Specification
(*1)

Explanation

Tier Pool Name

Required

This is a name of the Tier pool to be created.
This name must be unique across all the ETERNUS Disk storage system registered in Storage Cruiser.

Any alphanumeric character (1 - 16 characters), a hyphen (-), an underscore (_), and a pound symbol (#) may be specified. The letters to be specified are not case sensitive.

Policy Name

Optional

Specify the Tiering policy to associate with the Tier pool that is being created.
Make a selection from the Tiering policies that have been defined and are displayed in the pull-down list. (*2)

Warning Threshold of Pool

Optional

To monitor the available capacity of the Tier pool, specify a threshold (%) of the usage rate of the Tier pool as a decimal figure in the range of 5 - 99. The default setting is "90".
Specify a value that is greater than Caution Threshold of Pool.

When this threshold is exceeded, a warning is notified by the SNMP Trap.

When the usage rate of the Tier pool exceeds 90 %, the Tier pool can be used but evaluation and relocation cannot be completed properly.

Caution Threshold of Pool

Optional

To monitor the available capacity of the Tier pool, specify a threshold (%) of the usage rate of the Tier pool as 0 or as a decimal figure in the range of 5 - 80. The default setting is "75".
Specify a value that is less than Warning Threshold of Pool.

When this threshold is exceeded, a caution is notified by the SNMP Trap.

When "0" is specified or the Set no Caution Threshold of pool checkbox is checked on, the value of this item is disabled.

Encryption Status

Required

Specify whether to make the Tier pool being created an encrypted Tier pool.
The default setting is "No" (do not encrypt).

When setting this as an encrypted Tier pool, select "Yes".

Specify Assigned CM

Optional

As needed, specify the CM which takes charge of the Tier pool being created.

The checkbox is not checked by default (a CM in charge is not specified).

To specify a CM which takes charge of the Tier pool, check the checkbox. All of the CMs present on the storage device are displayed, make a selection from these.

Number of Layers

Optional

Specify the number of layers of the Tier pool that is being created. 2 or 3 may be selected.
The default setting is "2". (*2)

Disk Selection

Optional

Specify the disk selection method for configuring the sub-pool.
"Auto" (automatic selection) or "Manual" (manual selection) can be selected.
The default setting is "Auto".

If "Auto" is selected, in the screen for configuring the Low sub-pool, the Middle sub-pool, and the High sub-pool, the required minimum capacity must be specified for each sub-pool.

If "Manual" is selected, in the screen for configuring the Low sub-pool, the Middle sub-pool, and the High sub-pool, the disks for configuring each sub-pool must be specified.

*1: When a specification is omitted for the item of which specification is "Optional", a default value is configured.
*2: This cannot be specified when creating a one layer Tier pool.

Configuration Items of Sub-Pool
  • If "Auto" is selected for Disk Selection in "Basic Configuration Items of Tier Pool":

    Item

    Specification
    (*1)

    Explanation

    FTSP Name

    Optional

Specify a name (that is unique within the ETERNUS SF system) for the sub-pool.

Any alphanumeric character (1 - 16 characters), a hyphen (-), an underscore (_), and a pound symbol (#) may be specified. The letters to be specified are not case sensitive.

    Disk Type

    Required

Specify the type of disk for configuring the sub-pool.

Make a selection from the disk types that are displayed in the pull-down list.

    Reliability

    Required

Specify the RAID level of the sub-pool. Make a selection from one of the following that are displayed in the pull-down list:

    • High Performance(RAID1+0)

    • High Capacity(RAID5)

    • High Reliability(RAID6)

    • High Reliability(RAID6-FR)

    • Mirroring(RAID1)

    • Striping(RAID0)

    Select Disks

    Optional

When "High Reliability (RAID6-FR)" is selected for Reliability, specify one of the following methods for automatically selecting RAID group disks for configuring the sub-pool:

    • Minimize number of using disks

    • Prioritize rebuild rate

When a level other than "High Reliability (RAID6-FR)" is selected for Reliability, this item does not need to be specified.

    Minimum Required Capacity

    Required

Specify the minimum capacity required for the sub-pool.
A capacity of 1 MB or more may be specified. It is also possible to enter a decimal value.

A drive is automatically selected in accordance with the RAID group specification and a sub-pool greater than or equal to the specified capacity is created.

    • If the storage device is an ETERNUS DX S4/S3 series (excluding the ETERNUS DX8900 S4) or an ETERNUS AF S2 series, an ETERNUS AF series with a firmware version V10L70 or later, or an ETERNUS DX S6/S5 series, an ETERNUS DX8900 S4, an ETERNUS AF S3 series

The maximum capacity that can be created for the sub-pool is displayed in the format "(MAX: maximumCapacityToBeCreated)". For example, if the maximum capacity that can be created for the sub-pool is 2 PB, this is displayed as "(MAX: 2PB)". Specify a value less than or equal to the displayed capacity for this item.

    Specify Assigned CM

    Optional

Only when a CM in charge has been specified for Specify Assigned CM of "Basic Configuration Items of Tier Pool", as needed, specify the CM which takes charge of the RAID group configuring the sub-pool.

The checkbox is not checked by default (a CM in charge is not specified). Any CM in charge can be configured from the CM in charge specified to the Tier pool.

To specify a CM in charge, check the checkbox. All of the CMs specified for Specify Assigned CM of "Basic Configuration Items of Tier Pool" are displayed, make a selection from these. Up to 2 CMs may be specified.

*1: When a specification is omitted for the item of which specification is "Optional", a default value is configured.

*1: When a specification is omitted for the item of which specification is "Optional", a default value is configured.

Refer to "Create Tier Pool" in the Web Console Guide for information on how to create a Tier pool.

Point

  • Multiple Tier pools can be created in one ETERNUS SF system.

  • Only one Tiering policy can be configured to one Tier pool.

  • The chunk size that is set for a Tier pool is determined based on the maximum pool capacity of a storage device.

  • The chunk size of the Tier pools that have already been created cannot be changed.

It is also possible to recycle the made Tier pool having registered the storage device. Refer to "3.5.2 Recycling of Tier Pool Made in Storage Device" for details.
