By setting a backup policy schedule on VMware vCenter Server, virtual machine backups are performed automatically. With Web Console, automatic execution of the virtual machine backup can be set to enable/disable.
The procedure to enable/disable the automatic execution of virtual machine backups is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup Management.
The VMware guest list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the target VMware guest.
On the Action pane, click Enable or Disable under Auto Execution.
With Web Console, a virtual machine backup can be instantaneously executed manually.
The procedure to execute the virtual machine backup manually is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup Management.
The VMware guest list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, check the target VMware guest checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Execute under Manual Execution.
The warning dialog box is displayed. Check the displayed information, and then click OK.
The procedure to display the virtual machine backup history is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup History.
The backup history list is displayed on the Main pane.
When displaying the Snapshot backup history, click the Snapshot Backup History tab in the Main pane.
When displaying the Clone backup history, click the Clone Backup History tab in the Main pane.
Restoration from a Snapshot backup is a function that restores the VMware guest to the point in time when the backup was acquired.
The procedure to restore from the Snapshot backup is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup History.
The backup history list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the Snapshot Backup History tab. Then, check the target backup history checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Restore under Snapshot.
The warning dialog box is displayed. Check the displayed information, and then click OK.
Information
Executing a restore by specifying a VMware guest is also possible. The restoration procedure of the Snapshot backup where the VMware guest is specified is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup Management.
The VMware guest list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the target VMware guest.
The VMware Guest Details screen is displayed.
Click the Snapshot Backup History tab. Then, check the target backup history checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Restore under Snapshot.
The warning dialog box is displayed. Check the displayed information, and then click OK.
Note
If the VMware guest of the backup source has been deleted, a restoration of the Snapshot backup cannot be executed.
Single item restore performs a restore to a temporary volume that is different from the Virtual Volume that was backed up. The temporary volume is automatically allocated to the VMware guest where the Snapshot backup was acquired.
By referencing the temporary volume from the VMware guest, a restoration can be manually performed for each file.
The procedure to perform the single item restore from the Snapshot backup is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup History.
The backup history list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the Snapshot Backup History tab. Then, check the target backup history checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Single Item Restore under Snapshot.
The Single Item Restore screen is displayed. Enter the allocation time duration of temporary volume and check the target VMDK files. Then, click Restore.
Information
Executing a Single item restore by specifying a VMware guest is also possible. The Single item restore procedure of the Snapshot backup where the VMware guest is specified is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup Management.
The VMware guest list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the target VMware guest.
The VMware Guest Details screen is displayed.
Click the Snapshot Backup History tab. Then, check the target backup history checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Single Item Restore under Snapshot.
The Single Item Restore screen is displayed. Enter the allocation time duration of temporary volume and check the target VMDK files. Then, click Restore.
Note
If the VMware guest of the backup source has been deleted, a single item restore of the Snapshot backup cannot be executed.
The procedure to delete the Snapshot backup is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup History.
The backup history list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the Snapshot Backup History tab. Then, check the target backup history checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Delete under Snapshot.
The warning dialog box is displayed. Check the displayed information, and then click OK.
Information
Even if this operation is performed, the Virtual Volume of the backup source is not deleted.
Restore from the Clone backup is a function to restore newly created Virtual Volumes and VMware guests. Different from restore of the Snapshot backup, restore from the Clone backup is available even if a Virtual Volume as backup source is damage or deleted.
The procedure to restore from the Clone backup is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup History.
The backup history list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the Clone Backup History tab. Then, check the target backup history checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Restore under Clone Backup.
The Restore Clone Backup screen is displayed. Enter the name of the VMware guest that is newly created, and then click Restore.
Information
Executing a restore by specifying a VMware guest is also possible. However, if the target VMware guest is deleted, the operation is not possible because the VMware guest is not displayed in the VMware Guest Overview screen. When restoring a deleted VMware guest, operate from the VVOL Backup History screen.
The restoration procedure of the Clone backup where the VMware guest is specified is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup Management.
The VMware guest list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the target VMware guest.
The VMware Guest Details screen is displayed.
Click the Clone Backup History tab. Then, check the target backup history checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Restore under Clone Backup.
The Restore Clone Backup screen is displayed. Enter the name of the VMware guest that is newly created, and then click Restore.
Point
When restoring with the same name as the VMware guest where the backup was acquired, the VMware guest where the backup was acquired must be deleted before the restoration. Refer to the VMware vCenter Server manuals for information on the VMware guest deletion procedure.
The procedure to delete the Clone backup is as follows:
On the global navigation tab, click Storage.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Management.
The items of the Category pane change into the items concerning the VVOL Management.
On the Category pane, click VVOL Backup History.
The backup history list is displayed on the Main pane.
On the Main pane, click the Clone Backup History tab. Then, check the target backup history checkbox.
On the Action pane, click Delete under Clone Backup.
The warning dialog box is displayed. Check the displayed information, and then click OK.
Information
Even if this operation is performed, the backup source Virtual Volume is not deleted.
