4.1.7 VMware Server Node

If using End to End display for the VM host (VMware ESX or VMware ESXi) itself and any VM guests (virtual machines and guest operating systems) and storage devices can be supported by registering the VM host to the VMware vCenter Server.

It communicates directly with VMware ESX, VMware ESXi or VMware vCenter Server without using an Agent, and displays information about the VM host and VM guests.

4.1.7.1 Setting

IP addresses

It is recommended to set an IP address in the same format (IPv4 or IPv6) as the VM host.
If the IP address format (IPv4 or IPv6) of the VM guest is different from that of the VM host, the IP address of the VM guest is not displayed.

VMware Tools

It is recommended that VMware Tools be installed on the guest OS.

VMware Tools must be running on the guest OS in order to display information about the guest OS (such as the IP address, host name, and the name and version of the operating system). When VMware Tools is not installed on the guest OS, refer to "4.1.7.2 Problem-handling (FAQ)" for what is displayed in it.
To use the VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes function, install VMware Tools on the guest OS.

When operating an Exchange Server Database Availability Group (hereinafter referred to as "DAG") in the VM guest environment

Set the IP address for management of the VM guest and the IP address for the DAG to another network adapter each. Assign the IP address for management of the VM guest to the network adapter with the highest number.

If the VM guest is a single network adaptor environment, newly allocate the network adaptor to the VM guest, and operate the network adaptor separately for IP address for DAG and IP address for the management of the VM guest.

When displaying the End to End list for VM guest and storage device or in the VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes environment

Registration of the VMware vCenter Server to which the VM host was registered is also necessary. An IP address, user name, and password are required for registering the VMware vCenter Server.

When the VM host has been registered to the VMware vCenter Server using the IP address, specify the IP address registered to the VMware vCenter Server also when registering the VM host to this product.

If VMware vCenter Server is already registered to this product, reload VMware vCenter Server.

4.1.7.2 Problem-handling (FAQ)

VM Host
  • When the hostname or IP address is changed
After changing the IP address or host name of the VM host, perform the Reload Conf. operation for the target device on Web Console.

  • When the user name or password is changed
After changing the user name or password, set the new username or password for this software using Web Console.

VM Guest
  • When the virtual machine name or host name of the guest OS is changed
After changing the virtual machine name of the VM guest or host name of the guest OS, perform the Reload Conf. operation for the VM host where the target device exists, on Web Console.

  • When the IP address of the guest OS is changed
After changing the IP address of the guest OS, perform the Modify operation for the target device on Web Console.

  • When the host name of the quest OS is not displayed
Check whether VMware Tools is running. If VMware Tools is not running, the virtual machine name is displayed in the [Name] for VM guests.

  • When the OS information of the guest OS is not displayed
Check whether VMware Tools is running. If VMware Tools is running, the name and the version of the guest OS are displayed in the [OS]. (The OS version is not displayed in the [OS Level].) If VMware Tools is not running, the system name and the version number of VMware are displayed in the [OS] and [OS Level].

  • When the status of the guest OS is displayed as "Stop" even though it is running
Check whether VMware Tools is running. If VMware Tools is stopped, the status of the guest OS is displayed as "Stop" (even if the guest OS is running). If VMware Tools has not been installed, then the [Status] of VM guests is "Normal" if the virtual machine is running and "Stop" if the virtual machine is stopped, regardless of the [Status] of the guest OS.

  • When the status of the guest OS is displayed as "Warning"
Check whether a wrong username or password causes a communication failure with the VM host.

  • When a DAG IP address is displayed for the IP address of the VM guest
Add a new network adaptor to the VM guest, and set IP address for the management of the VM guest to it again. Perform the Reload Conf. operation with Web Console after setting.

Note

If more than one network adapter is defined in the VM guest, an IP address of the VM guest is displayed only one. The displayed IP address is a primary IP address that is defined to a VM guest. Generally a primary IP address indicates the IP address of the network adapter first recognized by OS.
