Configuration information stored in the CMDB can be displayed in report format. In addition, it is possible to detect inappropriate configuration information and take corrective action while confirming the content. For example, it is possible to detect the following inappropriate configuration information:
Software older than specified version has been installed
The number of the installed software exceeds the number of licenses possessed
Reporting is performed using two functions (views and policies).
A view is a function that displays the desired configuration information. Define the configuration information to display in each view. Multiple views can be defined. Only infrastructure administrators can reference, register, update, and delete views.
Policies are rules configured for determining whether the configuration information displayed in a view is appropriate. Configuring policies enables the detection of inappropriate configurations. Multiple policies can be defined. Only infrastructure administrators can reference, register, update, and delete policies.
The overall flow of the operations is as follows:
Register views [operation by an infrastructure administrator]
Infrastructure administrators register the views that display the configuration information which need to be checked. In the configuration information to display in the views, include the configuration information to verify.
Register policies [operation by an infrastructure administrator]
Infrastructure administrators register the rules which determine whether the configuration information is suitable to be displayed in views as policies.
Collect configuration information [processing by Systemwalker Software Configuration Manager]
Systemwalker Software Configuration Manager collects configuration information and stores it in the CMDB by performing regular discovery.
Check policy compliance statuses [operation by an infrastructure administrator]
Infrastructure administrators log in to the management console to check the policy compliance statuses. If any policies are being violated, check the content of the corresponding configuration information.
Take corrective action [operation by an infrastructure administrator, tenant administrator, or tenant user]
Infrastructure administrators notify the administrators in charge of the resources which are in violation of policies. The users who received the notifications take necessary actions by performing patch application, software installation, or configuring software parameter settings.
