7.2.3 Setting Monitoring Intervals

Enter the interval at which performance information is secured in the ETERNUS Disk storage systems and Fibre Channel switch common settings. You can specify 5, 10, 30, 60, 300, or 600 seconds as the interval. However, intervals that can be specified vary depending on device models and the number of Logical Volumes indicating performance level being maintained.

If "All" is selected for the scope of the monitoring volumes, this product automatically changes the monitoring interval according to the number of monitoring volumes.
If it is not possible to monitor at the specified monitoring interval by adding monitoring volumes, the monitoring interval is automatically lengthened. After that, if it is possible to shorten the lengthened monitoring interval by reducing monitoring volumes, the monitoring interval is automatically shortened. However, the monitoring interval cannot be shorter than the initially specified Minimum Monitoring Interval Time.

Point

In LAN traffic or cross-subnet (where there is a gateway between the performance monitoring target device and the Management Server) situations, it may not be possible to obtain the performance information inside the monitoring interval that was set. Change the monitoring interval when you cannot acquire performance information on each monitoring interval.

Note

  • The Fibre Channel switch and Fibre Channel switch blade as shown in the table below, set a monitoring interval according to the FC transfer rate. If this setting is incorrect, it might not be possible to obtain the correct performance value from the device.

    Device Model Name

    Monitoring Interval

    Transfer Rate

ETERNUS SN200 series Fibre Channel switch

Brocade Fibre Channel switch (except for Brocade 6510, Brocade DCX8510-8/8510-4, and Brocade 6505)

    PRIMERGY Fibre Channel switch blade

    5 seconds

    1 - 25 Gbps

    10 seconds

    1 - 12 Gbps

    30 seconds

    1 - 4 Gbps

    60 seconds

    1 - 2 Gbps

  • On the performance information for the number of active disks, power consumption and temperature, the performance monitoring interval sets 60 seconds if its interval is set to shorter than 60 seconds.

  • When performing performance management for ETERNUS SN200 series and Brocade series managed by SNMPv3 protocol, it is required to change the monitoring interval of the ETERNUS SN200 series and Brocade series according to the number of managed devices.
Set monitoring interval to a value larger than the value calculated by the following formula.
If the calculated value is 60 or more, set monitoring interval to 60 seconds.

    Calculated value = a + b * 2

a: Total number of Disk storage systems, All Flash Arrays, ETERNUS SN200 series, and Brocade series, which are managed by SNMPv3 protocol.
b: Number of devices whose performance is managed among the ETERNUS SN200 series and Brocade series, which are managed by SNMPv3 protocol.

In the following example, a calculated value is 7 and set monitoring interval to 10, 30, or 60 seconds:

    • The total number of Disk storage systems, All Flash Arrays, ETERNUS SN200 series, and Brocade series, which are managed by SNMPv3 protocol, is 3.

    • The number of devices whose performance is managed among the ETERNUS SN200 series and Brocade series, which are managed by SNMPv3 protocol, is 2.

    Calculated value = 3 + 2 * 2

Since the performance management unit is started as a daemon of the Management Server, the unit continues obtaining performance information while the Management Server is active, without starting the Web Console.

The logical configuration of the storage device is recognized, and the obtaining of performance information starts. At the start of obtaining performance information of the selected storage system, an amount of time (tens of seconds to several minutes) is spent to obtain the logical configuration before any performance information is actually obtained.

Performance monitoring status, description and action are described as follows:

Performance Monitoring Status

Description

Action

Monitoring

Shows that performance monitoring works normally.

No action is required.

Recovering

Shows that performance monitoring is in recovery state.

Management Server cannot communicate to devices. Check the network and device conditions.

If logged on to the ETERNUS Web GUI, log off from it.

Error

Shows that performance monitoring is in error state.

It is possible that writing to performance information file failed. Check the write access to file and the file system capacity and then perform the following steps. Refer to "7.2.10 Performance Data" for the location to store performance information file in:

  1. Record the performance monitoring settings contents

    <Recorded settings contents>

    • Interval before obtaining performance information (in seconds)

    • Performance monitoring targets (only for ETERNUS Disk storage system. Minimum LUN_V, Maximum LUN_V)

  2. Stop performance monitoring

Refer to "7.2.8 Instruction for Stopping Performance Management".

  3. Start performance monitoring based on the settings contents recorded in step 1

Refer to "7.2.2 Instruction for Performance Management" and "7.2.3 Setting Monitoring Intervals".

If despise of the above steps having been taken, any performance monitoring error is not resolved, internal error may be occurring. Contact Fujitsu Technical Support.
