A.3.9 Notes on Executing Commands in Windows [Windows version]

Behavior under different user privileges

If a command is executed in Windows with User Account Control (UAC) enabled, the operation will depend on the privileges of the user logged into the operating system.

When logging into the operating system as an administrator

If the user has logged into the operating system using the user name "Administrator", commands that require administrator privileges can be executed directly.

When logging into the operating system as a user who is a member of the Administrators group (but is not the Administrator)

If the user who has logged into the operating system is a member of the Administrators group but does not have the user name "Administrator", a dialog box requesting elevation of privileges will appear when that user attempts to execute a command, regardless of whether the command requires administrator privileges or general user privileges. This dialog box allows the user to decide whether to execute the command using Administrator privileges. If authorization is provided, a separate command prompt will appear temporarily and the command will run in the new command prompt window. This temporary command prompt window will close automatically once the command has finished running.

When logging into the operating system as a general user

When the command that requires administrator privileges is executed, a dialog box requesting elevation of privileges will appear and the user will be asked to enter the name and password of a user with administrator privileges. If a correct user name and password are entered, a separate command prompt will appear temporarily and the command will run in the new command prompt window. This temporary command prompt window will close automatically once the command has finished running.

If the dialog box requesting elevation of privileges and the command prompt window following privilege elevation disappear automatically, perform the following procedure:

  1. Right-click the Windows Command Prompt in the Start menu and select Run as from the pop-up menu.

The Command Prompt window will appear.

  2. Execute the command from the Command Prompt window.
