4.1.7 VMware Server Node

4.1.7.1 VMware vSphere 4 or Later

This software supports VMware vSphere 4 or later.

If using VMware vSphere 4 or a later version, End to End display for the VM guests and storage devices can be supported by registering the VM host to the VMware vCenter Server.

It communicates directly with VMware ESX, VMware ESXi or VMware vCenter Server without using an Agent, and displays information about the VM host and VM guests.

Configuration Management

This software communicates with the VM host (VMware ESX or VMware ESXi) to acquire information about the VM host itself and any VM guests (virtual machines and guest operating systems) on the VM host, and displays this information on the Web Console.

  • Device registration

To register a VM host and its VM guests with this software, the IP address, login name and password of the VM host are required.
By registering a VM host, all of the VM guests on the VM host are automatically registered.
It is not possible to register VM guests by specifying them individually.

For displaying the VM guests, the storage devices, and their End to End list:

    • Registration of the VMware vCenter Server to which the VM host was registered is also necessary. An IP address, user name, and password are required for registering the VMware vCenter Server.

    • When the VM host has been registered to the VMware vCenter Server using the IP address, specify the IP address registered to the VMware vCenter Server also when registering the VM host to this product.

If the IP address of a VM host is in IPv4 format, the IP addresses of its VM guests are displayed in the value that has set in IPv4 format.
If the IP address of a VM host is in IPv6 format, the IP addresses of its VM guests are displayed in the value that has set in IPv6 format.

  • Device deletion

To delete a VM host from this product, it is required to first delete all the VM guests contained in the VM host. After deletion of the VM guests has completed, delete the VM host.
When a VM guest is specified, only the VM guest is deleted from this software.

  • Access path management

This software supports setting up, deleting and inheriting the access paths associated with the HBA for the VM host.
This software does not support access path management for VM guests because it does not support HBA management.

When the access path environment modification (setting up, deleting and inheriting) is executed, reboot the VM host or execute the following procedures by using VMware Infrastructure Client.

    1. Select the "Configuration" tab

    2. Select "Storage Adapters" from Hardware lists.

    3. From Hardware lists, select the device corresponding to HBA that the access path setting was changed.

At this time, select the device of the same name as logical HBA number displayed in the Web Console.

    4. Execute "Rescan" from pop-up menu.

Fault Management
  • Receiving SNMP Trap

The fault management by using SNMP Trap function is not supported.

  • Device polling

This software supports device polling for VM hosts. Device polling can be used to determine whether communications are possible between the Manager and VM hosts.
If a VM host cannot communicate, its VM guests will also be treated as though they cannot communicate.
This software cannot detect status changes for VM guests because it does not support device polling for VM guests.
Using the Web Console, perform [Reload Conf.] for the relevant device, and confirm the latest information.

Changing Environment
  • Changing the host name or IP address

When the hostname or IP address of a VM host is changed, it is necessary to delete its VM host from this software and register its VM host again after changing the hostname or IP address.

When the VM guest virtual machine name, the guest OS's IP address, or the guest OS's host name have been changed, perform [Reload Conf.] for the relevant device by using the Web Console.

  • New creation of VM guest

When a new VM guest is created, perform [Reload Conf.] for the VM host containing the VM guest.

  • User name and password

When the user name or password of the VM host has been changed, set the new username or password for this software using the Web Console.

  • Moving VM guest between VM hosts

This software cannot automatically detect that a VM guest has been moved, whether it was moved with either VMware vMotion or VMware HA function. Communication with a moved VM guest is not possible. Therefore, when a VM guest is moved regardless whether the move was automatic or manual, perform the following procedures using the Web Console.

    1. Delete the moved VM guest from its source VM host.

    2. Perform [Reload Conf.] for the destination VM host to which the VM guest was moved.

If the source VM host from which the VM guest was moved is not registered on this product, execute only step 2 above.
If the destination VM host from which the VM guest was moved is not registered on this product, execute only step 1 above.

Note

  • It is recommended that VMware Tools be installed on the guest operating system.

  • VMware Tools must be running on the guest operating system in order to display information about the guest operating system (such as the IP address, host name, and the name and version of the operating system).

  • If VMware Tools is not running, the virtual machine name will be displayed in the [name] for VM guests. When VMware Tools is started, the host name for the guest operating system will be displayed in the [name] for VM guests.

  • If the same format (IPv4 or IPv6) IP address as the VM host is not set to VM guests, the IP addresses of the VM guests are not displayed.

  • If VMware Tools is running, the name and the version of the guest operating system are displayed in the [OS]. (The OS version is not displayed in the [OS Level].) If VMware Tools is not running, the system name and the version number of VMware are displayed in the [OS] and [OS Level]

  • If VMware Tools has been installed, the [Status] of VM guests will be "Normal" if VMware Tools is running. If VMware Tools is stopped, the device status will change to "Stop" (even if the guest operating system is running).

  • If VMware Tools has not been installed, then the [Status] of VM guests will be "Normal" if the virtual machine is running and "Stop" if the virtual machine is stopped, regardless of the [Status] of the guest operating system.

  • When it is not possible to communicate with the VM host because of inconsistency for user name and password, the [Status] of the VM host and its VM guest becomes "Warning".

  • If more than one network adapter is defined in the VM guest, an IP address of the VM guest will be displayed only one. The IP address assigned to the network adapter with the highest number among the valid network adapters defined in the VM guest will be displayed.

  • When operating an Exchange Server Database Availability Group (hereinafter referred to as "DAG") in the VM guest environment;

    • Set the IP address for management of the VM guest and the IP address for the DAG to another network adapter each. Assign the IP address for management of the VM guest to the network adapter with the highest number.

    • If the VM guest is a single network adaptor environment, newly allocate the network adaptor to the VM guest, and operate the network adaptor separately for IP address for DAG and IP address for the management of the VM guest.

    • IP address of the VM guest displayed with this product might be IP address for DAG in the DAG environment. In that case, add a new network adaptor to the VM guest, and set IP address for the management of the VM guest to it again. Perform [Reload Conf.] with the Web Console after setting.
