3.2.1 Precautions on Design

Note the points described below when designing a network loop that uses the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to achieve redundancy.

Mixed STPs

There are different types of STP. Which type can be used depends on the network devices that the STP is used with. If you mix protocols, STP may not function correctly. Check which protocol is the correct one for your system before using STP.

Behavior of STP on Network Device Failure

In networks using STP to prevent loop structures, the failure of a network device can cause the STP packet loop guard to stop working. In such cases, a loop may be created, causing a broadcast storm and thus bringing down the network. For this reason, it is recommended to use network devices that have an L2 loop prevention function.
