PRIMECLUSTER GLS for Windows User's Guide 4.3

1.2 Main Functions of GLS

The main functions of GLS are as follows:

Table 1.1 Main Functions of GLS

Function

Overview

Virtual control

Virtual adapter

You can create a single virtual network adapter (virtual adapter) to bundle multiple network adapters (physical adapters).

You can share NICs with multiple virtual adapters. However, in order to do this, the usage conditions of all of the NICs shared by each virtual adapter must be the same.

There is no restriction on destination systems.

Duplicate control

The redundant transmission paths are used exclusively: while one is operational, the other is on standby.

Monitor

Monitors failures in the NIC, cable, or network switch, as well as faulty network devices.

Monitoring starts/stops at the following timing:

  • Start of monitoring
    Monitoring starts automatically with Windows.

  • Stop of monitoring
Monitoring stops automatically when Windows shuts down or when the virtual adapter is stopped by command.

Details of the monitoring are shown below:

  • Link status monitoring:
Monitors connection status based on notifications from the physical adapter.
Detection time: 1 - 2 seconds (including switch time).

  • Ping monitoring:
Monitors the communication status of network devices based on ping responses.
Detection time: About 15 seconds (default value).

You can change the detection time. For more details, refer to "6.2.4 hanetpoll."

Switching

If a failure occurs in the operational physical adapter, the switch function switches communications from the operational transmission path to the standby transmission path.

Switch time: 1 - 2 seconds (including detection time).

Restoring

The restore function performs the following tasks when a failed transmission path is restored:

  • If an operational physical adapter exists
Connects the corresponding physical adapter as the standby adapter.

  • If no operational physical adapter exists
Connects the corresponding physical adapter as the operational adapter.

Disconnecting

If a failure occurs in the physical adapter on standby, the disconnect function disconnects that physical adapter.

Note that, if an NIC is on standby, only failures due to linkdown can be detected in that NIC.

Communication control

IPv4 Communication

The following types of communication are available with IPv4:

  • Unicast

  • Broadcast

  • Multicast

IPv6 Communication

The following types of communication are available with IPv6:

  • Unicast

  • Multicast

Communication by VLAN tagging

VLAN tagging (IEEE 802.1 Q) allows for setting up multiple virtual networks.

Control of script execution

Execution of user scripts

When monitoring has detected an error, prepared scripts can be executed with the following timing:

  • When an error has been detected on a transmission path

  • When an error has been detected in the destination system
